About Flower Mound Texas
Flower Mound is an incorporated town that started out as a planned community. It is now an affluent town with a light industrial component. The industrial aspect and its nearness to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport have boosted community growth and development. Still, it is primarily a residential community.
History of Flower Mound, TX
The town had its beginnings in a Presbyterian camp that was established in the area around the 1840s. The camps at that time were temporary, lasting less than a month. However, by the 1920s, permanent settlers had come in.
The town incorporated in 1961, to prevent annexation by the nearby City of Irving. In 1970, there was an attempt to create a planned town structure, but the residents were not pleased with the plans, and the conflict caused the development to be abandoned.
The opening of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport was the big trigger for expansion, and it continues to this day, albeit carefully controlled by the local government.
The Mound of Flower Mound
The town is named after the actual hill itself known as The Flower Mound, a 12.5-acre geological feature, around 50 feet at its highest point. As the name implies, it has many types of flowers growing in its slopes, and this growth is helped by natural water reservoirs on the hill itself.
Although it is surrounded by urban development, the Mound itself is owned by The Mound Foundation, a non-profit organization whose sole job is to protect the Mound against modern development, while at the same time making sure that its essential character remains (that of having many flowers).
Recreation, Parks and Trails
The town has a strong environmentalist culture, which has led to the development of parks, and recreation facilities, combined with a trail system made of hiking, biking and equestrian paths.
There have been mixed-use development projects, but the conservative nature of the town makes implementation slow. Still, the projects are expected to be finished just in time for the projected population expansion.
